Coffee First. Crisis Second.

Start your morning with strong coffee and even stronger strategy at our upcoming breakfast session, Crisis Comms and Coffee.

Join us for a wake up call with Rebecca Atkins, Deputy Director of Communications & Marketing for the Albuquerque Police Department. With firsthand experience navigating high-stakes, high-visibility moments, Rebecca will share insights into what it really takes to communicate clearly, credibly, and confidently when it matters most.

Effective crisis communication isn’t just about damage control — it’s about protecting trust, inspiring confidence, and positioning your organization for long-term strength. We’ve all seen how poorly handled crises in business, government, and nonprofits can undo years of good work in a matter of hours. This session will explore practical strategies to help you respond with transparency, empathy and authority.

Whether you’re in corporate communications, nonprofit leadership, government affairs or agency life, this is your chance to sharpen your crisis toolkit — before the next headline hits.

Rebecca Atkins started with the Albuquerque Police Department in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic and during nationwide civil unrest with police and the public. She was the public information officer for three years before briefly leaving to work as the Director of Marketing and Communications for a local non-profit in June 2023. That opportunity was short-lived as she has truly found a calling in communications for law enforcement and made the decision to leave that organization. Rebecca returned to APD in December of 2023 where she is now the Deputy Director of Communications and Marketing.

We'll also get to hear from Rebecca's colleagues at APD:

  • Gilbert Gallegos who has worked in the communications field for over 30 years, starting in 1993 as a reporter with The Albuquerque Tribune. He covered education, government and politics for nearly a decade before leaving journalism to take a job in the governor’s office. Gallegos was hired in 2017 by Mayor Tim Keller to be communications director for the Albuquerque Police Department. Gallegos continues in that role today, managing daily communications about public safety and the work of the largest law enforcement agency in the state.
